John N. Carter is an associate in the Orange County office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP where he is a member of the firm's Litigation Department, Environmental Litigation and Mass Tort Practice Group, and Intellectual Property Practice Group. Mr. Carter represents clients in a variety of litigation matters and has represented clients before the California Supreme Court, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and the Federal Circuit.

Environmental - Lockheed Martin Corp. v. United States Department of Defense, et al. - Representing plaintiff in a large CERCLA contribution action against the United States
- Portland Harbor Superfund Site - Defense of CERCLA response cost and natural resource damage claims involving contaminated harbor and river sediments resulting from a wide variety of industrial activities
- Harbor Island & West Seattle Superfund Sites - Defense of CERCLA response cost claims involving contaminated harbor and river sediments resulting from shipbuilding and other industrial activities
- Aniak White Alice Site - Defense of a state cost recovery claim involving the remediation of a former Cold War communication facility in Alaska
- Cooper Drum Superfund Site - Defense of an aerospace manufacturing client in a CERCLA action related to contamination at a former drum recycling plant
- Casmalia Resources Superfund Site - Defense of an aerospace manufacturing client in a CERCLA action related to contamination at a hazardous waste disposal facility
Intellectual Property - Allergan, Inc., et al. v. Athena Cosmetics, Inc., et al. - Representing plaintiffs in consolidated patent and trademark infringement, antitrust, and unfair competition actions before the United States District Court for the Central District of California
- Allergan, Inc., et al. v. Apotex Inc., et al. - Representing plaintiffs in a patent infringement action before the United States District Court for the Middle District of North Carolina
Pro Bono - Peralta v. T.C. Dillard, et al. - Trial counsel for pro se inmate in a prisoner civil rights case alleging deprivation of medical care in violation of 42 U.S.C. § 1983; tried to verdict before the United States District Court for the Central District of California
- Mughal, et al. v. Holder - Representing appellants before the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals; appellants seek asylum from Pakistan based on a fear of honor killings and other forms of violence against women
Additionally, Mr. Carter frequently advises clients on intellectual property and environmental law issues.
In early 2011, Mr. Carter served as a temporary Deputy District Attorney for the Orange County District Attorney’s Office, where he received substantial courtroom experience representing the People at preliminary hearings, motions and jury trial.
Mr. Carter has been with the firm since 2006. Mr. Carter received his law degree magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from the University of San Diego School of Law. While there, he was a Comments Editor for the San Diego Law Review. In 2002, Mr. Carter graduated from the University of California at Berkeley, earning his Bachelor of Arts degree in English. |
