Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP is pleased to announce that Thomas H. Dupree, Jr., formerly a top Department of Justice official, has rejoined the firm's Washington, D.C. office as a partner. Dupree will continue to focus on complex trial and appellate litigation.
Dupree served in the Department of Justice from 2007 to 2009, most recently as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General. In that capacity, he served as the Civil Division's second-in-command, overseeing more than 900 lawyers in the Civil Appellate, Commercial, Federal Programs and Torts branches, as well as the Office of Immigration Litigation and the Office of Consumer Litigation.
"We are delighted to welcome Tom back to the firm," said Ken Doran, Managing Partner of Gibson Dunn. "Litigation, especially appellate advocacy, has always been a strategic focus of the firm. The courtroom experience Tom has gained while in government will further strengthen our firm's capabilities."
"Tom is a superb litigator who has the utmost respect of his peers," said Theodore B. Olson, Co-Chair of the firm’s Appellate and Constitutional Law Practice Group and former Solicitor General of the United States. "As we continue to handle some of the most high-profile matters involving vital constitutional issues before the United States Supreme Court and other appellate courts around the country, it will be great to have Tom on board."
Dupree rejoins with Thomas G. Hungar, former Deputy Solicitor General of the United States, who also recently returned to Gibson Dunn in October 2008 and now serves as Co-Chair of the firm’s Appellate and Constitutional Law Practice Group.
"I look forward to returning to my Gibson Dunn home," said Dupree. "It's very exciting to rejoin so many good friends and colleagues, and to again be part of an appellate powerhouse with a deep bench of first-rate litigators."

Dupree served in the Department of Justice from 2007 to 2009, most recently as the Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General.
In his role as principal deputy, Dupree was closely involved in a wide variety of contract and tort matters, including disputes over government contracts and programs; FDA regulation of medical devices and pharmaceuticals; litigation over consumer product design and safety; employment disputes; FOIA claims; toxic tort claims and lawsuits arising from airplane and maritime accidents; labor and immigration matters; as well as constitutional challenges to federal statutes, regulations and executive branch actions generally. Dupree joined Gibson Dunn's Washington, D.C. office in 1998 and was made partner in 2006. He left the firm in early 2007 after being appointed Deputy Assistant Attorney General.
In 2006, Dupree was selected by Washingtonian magazine as one of Washington’s top 40 lawyers under age 40. He was also chosen as a national rising star by Lawdragon magazine, and described by Legal Times as a "prominent" young litigator who is "no stranger to high-profile work."
Dupree received his law degree with Honors in 1997 from the University of Chicago Law School, where he served as an Editor of the University of Chicago Law Review.
