Ladan F. Stewart is an associate in the New York office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher.  She is a member of the firm’s Litigation Practice, and is also a member of the White Collar Defense and Investigations, Securities Litigation, Securities Enforcement, and Health Care and Life Sciences Practice Groups.

Ms. Stewart’s practice focuses on complex commercial and securities litigation, white collar defense, securities enforcement and other regulatory actions, and compliance monitoring.  Ms. Stewart has represented companies, boards, and individuals in connection with white collar criminal investigations and prosecutions as well as related civil investigations by a wide range of regulators.  She has also defended companies and individuals in connection with allegations of securities fraud, breach of contract and tort, and violations of the RICO, ERISA, and antitrust statutes, among other areas.  In addition, she has significant experience in conducting internal corporate investigations and compliance monitoring.

Recent significant engagements include:

  • Representation of a leading financial institution in a multi-district litigation and related regulatory proceedings arising from its role as trustee for investor funds, where the issuer of the funds allegedly operated a multi-billion-dollar Ponzi scheme.
  • Counsel to an independent compliance monitor appointed by the DOJ to oversee an orthopedic implant manufacturer’s compliance with the terms of a deferred prosecution agreement arising from alleged violations of the anti-kickback statute.
  • Representation of a fund of hedge funds in litigation involving claims of breach of fiduciary duty under ERISA.
  • Representation of the special committee of a leading non-profit foundation in connection with an internal investigation and an investigation from the New York Attorney General’s Office.
  • Representation of a real estate management company in a class action lawsuit alleging violations of RICO and the New York Consumer Protection Act.
  • Representation of a valuation firm in connection with SEC enforcement proceedings related to valuations of collateralized debt obligations.
  • Representation of a private equity principal and fund in the public corruption “pay to play” investigation conducted by the New York Attorney General’s Office and the SEC.  

Ms. Stewart earned her Juris Doctor in 2003 from Columbia Law School, where she was a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and writing and research editor of the Columbia Journal of Law and Social Problems.  She received her Bachelor of Arts degree, with high distinction, from the University of Toronto in 2000. 

Ms. Stewart is admitted to practice in the State of New York, and before the United States District Courts for the Southern, Eastern, and Northern Districts of New York and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.
