Expanding its international platform, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP will open a new office in São Paulo, Brazil.
"Brazil is an important jurisdiction for Gibson Dunn in the context of our international practice and global platform," said managing partner Ken Doran. "Our clients in Brazil as well as elsewhere in the world – the United States, Europe, the Gulf Region and Asia – have encouraged us to enhance our presence in Brazil. The wide range of our firm’s skill base, combined with our standing among the top international firms doing business in Brazil, positions us well to continue to service our clients with interests there for the long term."
Gibson Dunn’s Brazilian practice will continue to focus on the energy and infrastructure project finance, capital markets and mergers and acquisition work it has performed in Brazil and the region for over a decade. The firm also has advised clients on a wider range of matters in Brazil, including private equity, fund formation, real estate and international arbitration.
"We have wanted to have a full-time physical presence in Brazil for some time, given the high-volume and high-profile nature of our work there and the wide range of our corporate and financial institution clients who are either located or investing in Brazil," said Kevin Kelley, Co-Chair of the firm’s Latin America Practice. "The São Paulo office is a strategic priority for the firm, and is a natural step given the firm’s significant Brazilian practice."
The new office will be anchored with New York corporate partner Lisa Alfaro, who will be based in São Paulo, and corporate partners Kevin Kelley and William Campbell, both of whom have focused on Brazilian work for many years and will continue to do so from the firm's New York office.
Kelley added, "Lisa has been an important part of our New York-based team focusing on Latin America for years, and she has lived and worked in Brazil during the course of her career. Having her resident in São Paulo is a good move for all, including, most importantly, our clients."
"I am very excited about opening the São Paulo office for Gibson Dunn," said Alfaro. "Brazil is a growing and dynamic market. I have worked on Brazilian matters for over a decade. Being in São Paulo will allow us to enhance our ability to apply the firm's world-class resources and skills to our clients’ most important challenges."
The new office follows the opening of offices by Gibson Dunn in Dubai and Singapore last year.
