Based in California, the Assistant Managing Attorney will work closely with the Managing Attorney-CA to develop best practices for electronic filing and docketing in the CA offices of the firm.

This role reports to the Managing Attorney-CA.

Responsibilities include:

  • Review all court documents served and/or filed through the Managing Attorney’s Office-CA for accuracy, as to form and procedural compliance.
  • Perform legal research to advise litigators on various procedural matters.
  • Provide procedural guidance and advice to lawyers with respect to motion practice, policy and procedure in California State and Federal Courts.
  • Assist with issues relating to service of process including engaging process servers.
  • Assist with and handle electronic case filings via CM/ECF and CA state court systems, in addition to hard copy filings and document retrieval.
  • Search for and extract information from court-related databases, websites and relevant docketing and calendaring applications including, but not limited to, PACER, Bloomberg Law, CourtAlert and Westlaw.
  • Screen and review incoming court documents and office correspondence to calculate and calendar relevant deadlines using the firm’s docketing system.
  • Assist with quality control of docket and calendar entries.
  • Assist with department projects as needed.
  • Electronically monitor all active firm matters, cases and litigants of interest through various databases (Bloomberg Law, E-Courts, CourtAlert, etc.).
  • Provide sample forms of pleadings and other legal documents.
  • Docket and calendar case information via CourtAlert docketing system. Compute future calendar dates based upon methods of service and filing of documents. Access information maintained on the internal electronic docket and calendar- including case history and future filing deadlines.

Qualifications

  • This position involves significant contact with lawyers, court and clerical staff and requires solid interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Must be a self-starter and possess the ability to work independently, under pressure, while exhibiting extraordinary attention to detail.
  • Must be familiar with California federal and state court systems and the corresponding federal and state court rules.
  • Able to interact effectively and professionally with all levels of personnel, including attorneys, co-workers and administrators.
  • Must be flexible to respond quickly and positively to shifting demands and able to work under tight deadlines.
  • Must be able to plan, organize and complete multiple related activities.
  • Must deliver high quality work product and have the ability to follow up and follow through.

Experience

  • A J.D. degree from an ABA-accredited law school and admission to California state bar required.
  • Experience supervising other members of a Managing Attorney/Clerk’s Office at a large law firm preferred.
  • Experience with CourtAlert preferred.

Compensation & Benefits:

The annual compensation range for this position is $175-200k. The salary offered within this range will depend upon qualifications and other operational considerations.
