Courtney Johnson is an associate in the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. Her practice focuses on complex commercial litigation, including labor and employment and class actions. Courtney has experience handling litigation matters in federal and state court at both the trial and appellate levels.
Representative matters in which Courtney has been involved include:
- Defeated certification of a class of employees bringing claims under the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (Mahone v. Amazon).
- Won a complete defense verdict in the Central District of California for an action brought by a former employee alleging whistleblower retaliation and wrongful termination (Fox v. Harry Winston, Inc.).
- Core member of the appellate team that secured a reversal of summary judgment at the Hawaii Supreme Court on novel eminent domain issues (HART v. Victoria Ward).
Courtney also maintains an active pro bono practice, including civil rights litigation and immigration matters. She was a lead associate of a team that secured a six-figure damages award after a weeklong jury trial in the Central District of California for a man wounded by a rubber bullet while peacefully protesting in Los Angeles (Jones v. City of Los Angeles). For that work, The Daily Journal honored Courtney as a 2024 “California Lawyer of the Year.”
Prior to joining Gibson Dunn, Courtney served as a law clerk to the Honorable Ronald S.W. Lew of the United States District Court for the Central District of California. Courtney graduated from the University of Southern California, Gould School of Law. While in law school, Courtney served as the Managing Editor for the Southern California Law Review and was a member of the Post-Conviction Justice Project. Prior to law school, she graduated summa cum laude from the University of San Diego with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science.
