In this presentation, we will provide an overview of different class actions regimes around the world in both common and civil law traditions and discuss the current and future challenges associated with defending against a class action in these jurisdictions.

Presenters

Osma Hudda is an English qualified partner in Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher’s London office and is a member of the Firm’s Dispute Resolution Group.

Osma has broad-based dispute resolution experience including litigation and international arbitration.

Osma’s litigation experience has involved representing clients in Employment Tribunals, the High Court, Court of Appeal and Supreme Court. In arbitration she has represented clients from a wide variety of industries, including construction and oil & gas, before arbitral tribunals including the ICC and LCIA.

Ms. Hudda was admitted as a Solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales in 2004.

Eric Bouffard is a partner in the Paris office of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, where he serves as a member of the firm’s Litigation, International Arbitration, Enforcement, Environmental and Social Governance and Business Restructuring Practice Groups.

Mr. Bouffard is particularly active in cross-border litigation, commercial arbitration, commercial law (including insolvency and recovery of debt), industrial risk (latent defects, interruption of production, delay and disruption claims, consequential losses), international trade and insurance before both judicial courts and arbitral tribunals.

Mr. Bouffard is a member of the Paris Bar.

Jean-Pierre Farges is a partner in the Paris office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, the global co-chair of the firm’s Business Restructuring & Reorganization Practice Group and a member of the firm’s Litigation Practice Group.

Jean-Pierre heads the Litigation practice in Paris, where he specializes in complex M&A litigation, arbitration, industrial risk, construction, international trade, insurance, reinsurance, equity capital insolvency dispute matters and public and administrative law disputes and regulatory issues. He has been involved in a number of major disputes before state courts and arbitral tribunals, acting for banks, funds companies and listed industrial companies.

Mr. Farges is member of the Paris Bar since 1995.

Lauren Blas is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher where her practice focuses on class actions, labor and employment litigation, and complex commercial litigation in the trial courts and on appeal. In 2021, Ms. Blas was recognized as a “Rising Star” by Law360, which recognizes top litigators and dealmakers practicing at a level usually seen from veteran attorneys. She was also recognized by The Best Lawyers in America® 2021 Ones to Watch in Labor and Employment and has been named a “Rising Star” in Class Actions/Mass Torts and Appellate Litigation in Southern California by Super Lawyers Magazine for multiple years.

Ms. Blas is a member of the California and New York bars, and is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Seventh, Ninth, and Tenth Circuits, as well as all U.S. district courts in California.

Alexander Horn is an of counsel in the Frankfurt office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher. He is a member of the firm’s Litigation, Class Actions, Transnational Litigation and International Arbitration Practice Groups.

He focuses his practice on class actions and collective redress as well as complex commercial litigation, often in a transnational context. He also advises on international arbitration matters.
