Gibson Team Wins Relief for Chinese Asylee
After three-and-a-half years of work, a Gibson Dunn team finally reunited a U.S. asylee, Ms. Xiuqin Rong, with her entire family in the United States in early 2018. Ms. Rong fled China in January 2013, because the government persecuted her for belonging to Falun Gong, a peaceful spiritual movement. After United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS”) denied her pro se asylum application in 2014, the Gibson team successfully obtained asylum relief for Ms. Rong in November 2016.
Next, the team requested derivative asylum for Ms. Rong’s husband, Guiyu Liang, and her two children, Wenlu and Shude Liang. USCIS granted those applications in October 2017, and Guiyu and Shude traveled to the United States the following month. However, because Wenlu’s three year-old daughter was not eligible for derivative status, the team applied for humanitarian parole on her behalf in November 2017. USICS approved that request in early 2018, and Wenlu and Zimeng arrived safely in this country. This was the first time that Ms. Rong has been reunited with her entire family in over five years.
Former associates Jane Kim, Jessica Sommer, Alyssa Kuhn, and Marc Epstein all provided invaluable assistance. Over the last few months, Julianne Duran, Elisa Dun, and Alex Zbrozek have made outstanding contributions. |
